The new WSL season is here!

I’m  on the move today, heading up to the Emirates to watch Arsenals first game of the new WSL season against Liverpool. I think it’s fair to say that I’m excited but then I’m well within my rights. This Sunday sees the start of a brand new season and after the last 18 months of celebratory love for the Lionesses, this season is predicted to be the most well attended by fans. And the fans have a lot to look forward to! The WSL has, in not just my opinion, become the most competitive league in Europe - if not the world - with the prospect of at least 5 teams capable of winning it this year. After the excitement of the transfer period that only ended a few weeks ago and included Arsenal snagging Alessia Russo from Man United and an audacious attempt to lure England’s star keeper Mary Earps with her to the Emirates, the Gunners are well backed to be the team to push and topple the mighty Chelsea this season and prevent Emma Hayes side from winning a 5th straight title. Ballon d'Flaw

Yesterday nominations for the Bllon d'Or were released, the most prestigious prize a footballer can win as an individual, recognition of their talent and contribution to the game over the past year. Despite the 30 nominees, the men's category this year will be fought out between World Cup winner Messi and winner of every club football accolade Haaland, it's actually a fairly boring two horse race and whilst there were some dubious inclusions on the list of men's nominees there was one very glaringly obvious omission from the women's list, Keira Walsh.  Her Barca team mates consider her one of the best midfielders in the world, some publicly stating that she IS the best 6, and it's not hard to see why a lot of the success that both Barca and England have had recently is because of her. I've watched Keira on and off the ball for years and the work she does quietly moving opposition players around like chess pieces on a board is a display of footballing genius...

The Spanish Revolution

30th Aug 2023  I'm still feeling quite sick by the fact that England didn't win, but despite defending their play, their subs, their efforts, the truth is starting to sink in that they were just beaten by the better team...Certainly in the first half anyway. But, that's the thing about these lionesses, I and many many millions like me will defend them no matter what because as it turns out, more and more people are falling in love with them each and every game.  The World Cup opened many eyes to the incredible spectacle that is the women's game, not just their technical abilities, strength, determination and skills but also their sportsmanship, this sisterhood that despite crunching in with some pretty heavy challenges, at the end of the games there was mainly real warmth towards one another as they picked each other up from the pitch and winners consoled losers. It represented so much about the women's game that I, and many like me, love. And this sisterhood has be...
